粟女神 ba'e ton'u&nbsp;

Millet Goddess ba'e ton'u

This work is part of the permanent exhibition “A-lí-san” and draws on Tsou mythology.

In ancient times, the Millet Goddess gave millet seeds to the Tsou people and taught them how to cultivate them. She asked them to hold ceremonies of thanks at harvest time. In those days, millet could produce grain five times, and just five grains were enough to cook a large pot of food, so the people lived in abundance.

Over time, people forgot the rituals of gratitude. One day, all the millet disappeared, leaving only a small handful of seeds. When replanted, the millet produced grain only once. Realising this was the anger of the Millet Goddess, the people began to hold rituals of thanks again, a tradition that continues today.

The painting shows a village surrounded by mountains and golden millet fields. The Millet Goddess holds millet while the people share meals, brew millet wine, prepare food, and pray for blessings during the harvest rituals.

During the creation process,&nbsp;
I visited Tsou villages in person
and incorporated elements of what I observed into the painting.
From left to right, the image includes:village houses / a millet wine–making scene / millet plants / an animal-bone rack

During the preparation for the harvest ritual, millet wine is brewed.
The process includes pounding the millet and cooking it. The cooked millet is then placed in large jars lined with leaves and left to ferment.

	《種子和風》 榮獲2024波隆那拉加茲獎精選1002024 金鼎獎 圖書插畫獎

在動與不動之間，一顆種子與風的愛之詩篇。&nbsp;

Selected for the 2024 Bologna Ragazzi Award – The BRAW Amazing BookshelfWinner of the 2024 Golden Tripod Award – Book Illustration&nbsp;

A love poem between a seed and the wind — suspended between motion and stillness.“

In spring, as the wind whispered through the forest, it fell in love with a seed that was destined to touch the ground.”

This romantic picture book was illustrated by me, with words co-created by ABI-SWORD screenwriter Mali and paper-cutting artist Shi-Yi Yang.

The project began when I was approached by Locus Publishing, which gave me the opportunity to create a picture book about love and freedom. The story centers around a winged seed. I tried to express its emotions through rich and varied colors — telling a story of tenderness, longing, and confusion.

	The Dark Frontier

This is a book documenting deep sea exploration. The author, Jeffrey Marlow, is a marine microbiologist as well as an explorer. For most of human history, the deep sea has remained a distant and largely unknown realm. The book traces the process of scientific exploration, showing how life survives and evolves in extreme environments, and also explores the connections between deep sea and terrestrial life.

For the cover, I combined and illustrated a variety of deep sea organisms, using luminous colours to evoke the mysterious and captivating nature of the deep ocean world.

02/24 – 08/23Yu-Hsiu Museum of Art
Walking through a decade

For the second floor of the Yu-Hsiu Museum of Art’s tenth anniversary exhibition, I created a series of works in collaboration with the museum. The museum sits between the Wu River and the Jiujiu Peaks in Caotun, Nantou. Inspired by the surrounding ecology, the exhibition extends these landscapes through imagination, reflecting the museum’s work and presence over the past decade.

Beneath the colourful, undulating ridges of the Jiujiu Peaks, the Wu River flows across the gallery space, accompanied by small fantastical creatures. On another wall, a vineyard map traces the development of the museum’s art education programme and includes some of the key figures who helped make the exhibition possible. On the sandbars of the Wu River, many small figures appear—waiting to be discovered throughout the exhibition.

The Wu River flows down from the Jiujiu Peaks. A small boat-shaped table rests upon it.

The museum has hosted many activities, which I imagine as different small creatures:
Night at the Museum becomes an owl,
the Dining Table Project an anteater,and the Mountain Market a flock of tiny birds.Interwoven with grasses and leaves, they transform into a series of fantastical little beasts.

The museum’s art outreach programme, ARTex, is currently rooted in several cities in central Taiwan. By bringing together resources and funding from across society, it uses art education projects as a bridge, allowing students in rural areas to encounter art as well. 珊瑚系列壓克力繪於木板&nbsp;

Coral Series
Acrylic on Wood Panel

This series explores the process of coral restoration. It originated from an invitation to the Zhengbin Art Biennial organised by Zhengbin art. During the creation period, I was in residence at Zhengbin Fishing Harbour and visited the Chaojing Ocean Center at the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology. The works reinterpret the process of coral restoration through painting.

One method of coral restoration resembles plant propagation by cuttings: a small fragment is taken from a parent colony, then attached to a ceramic base and placed in a cultivation tank that simulates an underwater environment, where it can gradually grow. In the early stage, these fragments are arranged on grid-like racks within the tanks; once they grow larger, they are gradually transplanted back into the ocean.

These corals resemble small, potted creatures in dark tanks, hovering between the imagery of animals and plants. This visual impression became the inspiration for this series.

	<img width="1400" height="786" width_o="1400" height_o="786" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f53329fee635e9b51529949916367f2978e17630b8034f43f2fffcf522fbeaa3/coral-1.jpg" data-mid="246557788" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f53329fee635e9b51529949916367f2978e17630b8034f43f2fffcf522fbeaa3/coral-1.jpg" />

Coral I

The tanks hold a variety of corals growing together,
forming clusters of vibrant underwater forests.

<img width="1400" height="786" width_o="1400" height_o="786" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/734776ec1f073de89f2cbe68b9bd2a24dc51d8716fe6c24572a5a501610771bb/Coral-2.jpg" data-mid="246557787" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/734776ec1f073de89f2cbe68b9bd2a24dc51d8716fe6c24572a5a501610771bb/Coral-2.jpg" />
Coral II
The coral's growth is magnified,
imagining it pushing beyond the tank and stretching out colorful branches.
<img width="1400" height="786" width_o="1400" height_o="786" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/b00bbf87ac8beed45355b657246124c1c1657271a1365713bc37437f099e7a14/Coral-3.jpg" data-mid="246557786" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/b00bbf87ac8beed45355b657246124c1c1657271a1365713bc37437f099e7a14/Coral-3.jpg" />
Coral III
The tank also holds other species.
I included Amphiprion clarkia, with Acropora, Fungia, and other corals growing together.
<img width="1400" height="786" width_o="1400" height_o="786" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/17ab544333b1989b33e719f4668ec8f852bd2bff9a7d6d688f123842dd217003/Coral-4.jpg" data-mid="246557785" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/17ab544333b1989b33e719f4668ec8f852bd2bff9a7d6d688f123842dd217003/Coral-4.jpg" />
Coral IV
Some corals in the cultivation tank grow attached to reef rocks.&nbsp;
<img width="1400" height="786" width_o="1400" height_o="786" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/5295a4d725f233ceb0dfd6fb8315155951c69b308273c386bba6d7b9f32715da/Coral-5.jpg" data-mid="246557784" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/5295a4d725f233ceb0dfd6fb8315155951c69b308273c386bba6d7b9f32715da/Coral-5.jpg" />

Coral V
Tube-like polyps sway in the water like tiny flowers.&nbsp;
I stacked layers of small corals on top of one another and added a Amphiprion perideraio fish.

<img width="1400" height="1867" width_o="1400" height_o="1867" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/67dae1f6a5e11aca567943f45869b0ecac1ebf525ee04747c1a2c086c8a9bc1f/-1400.jpg" data-mid="246559026" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/67dae1f6a5e11aca567943f45869b0ecac1ebf525ee04747c1a2c086c8a9bc1f/-1400.jpg" />《珊瑚六》萼形柱珊瑚的珊瑚蟲，遠看像是圈圈花朵一般。 Coral VII

The polyps of Hood coral look like tiny ring-shaped flowers from a distance. I placed it at the center of the composition, surrounded by various small corals with bases, building upward in overlapping layers.

<img width="1400" height="877" width_o="1400" height_o="877" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/369e92ef7b8e70b1459b453220103b5f985a9fab9a2579c598aaad2b70ecc325/2.jpg" data-mid="246564239" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/369e92ef7b8e70b1459b453220103b5f985a9fab9a2579c598aaad2b70ecc325/2.jpg" />

The exhibition is held at a shaved ice shop on Heping Island in Keelung.

Taipei W Hotel

Seasons by olivier e.

Artwork for Taipei W Hotel.
"Seasons by Olivier E." is the restaurant of Michelin-starred chef Olivier Elzer, blending French techniques with Taiwanese ingredients.

The walls depict the journey from the source to the plate through black and white lines. Curves overlap, forming ridges, clouds, and the terraced fields of mountains.

Various unique fruits and beans merge, rooted crops with legs traverse, taro and sweet potatoes stand face to face. Giant leafy vegetable is on the mountainside, surrounded by rice, bamboo shoots, ferns, and some greens with small claws. Urban architecture, lights, signs, and night market stalls are also integrated.

Hoppy Art Land

Calendar Illustration

Hoppy is a malt-fermented sparkling drink from Japan, commonly enjoyed with shochu and often found in izakayas. Each month, artists from around the world are invited to create posters, which are then displayed in some restaurants across Japan.

This illustration for July features vibrant sunflowers and hibiscus, celebrating the midsummer heat. Under the blue sky, the two flowers each hold a bottle of Hoppy, enjoying a refreshing drink. Hop vines weave between the large blossoms, infusing the scene with Hoppy’s flavor. Their roots resemble dancing feet, adding a joyful rhythm to the composition, while butterflies flutter around in a festive atmosphere.
