Reversing Fieldwork
The word “辶反” means opposition and reflection, but also movement and return. How can fieldwork “talk” with the state and institutions? What do anthropologists give back through their work? What kind of connections can exist between religion, science, and anthropology?
(Reversing Fieldwork) questions the traditional ways of doing fieldwork in anthropology and challenges the public's idea of what fieldwork is. At the same time, it explores how fieldwork can respond to the world today.
The illustration shows a mix of different fieldwork scenes. It reflects how fieldworkers in the book meet and interact sincerely with state systems, green energy projects, small farmers, Indigenous movements, social activists, migrant workers, scientists — and even with animals and plants.
